Trisha Yearwood, famous country star, has a typical  tradition on Mother’s Day. “This weekend, I’m going to be down in Georgia where my mom lives and my sister and her daughter and we’re going to build a house outside of Atlanta. Getting to spend Mother’s Day with my mom this year is a treat. We’re not always together on Mother’s Day.

Trisha has been busy in the kitchen for her new cookbook.
“I’m in the middle of working on a second cookbook with my mom and my sister. My first one came out last Mother’s Day and we were pretty overwhelmed by the success of it. So we’ve been working really hard on the second one. I learned from the first one that it’s not really about throwing recipes together, its takes a lot of work. When that’s done, I’m going to think about going in the studio. My hope is to have something out next year and that’s when I’ll go out and tour again.”

    Sharing cooking duties with Garth.
“I would say it’s 50/50. I probably do a little more than he does, but there’s a lot of cooking together. We have three girls and the youngest is about to be a teenager, so it’s sometimes hard to all eat together. It’s more like, ‘Here’s what’s going on today, who can make dinner?’ But we really eat home a lot and enjoy eating home cooked meals.”

She has proven that powerful things can happen. The country star has helped launch Habitat for Humanity’s National Women Build Week and has given new meaning to the words “getting your nails done.”  She and husband Garth Brooks share a passion for community service and inspire others to do the same.

Yearwood is also an inspiration to budding country starlets, and the admiration is mutual. She gives props to young country stars like Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood — despite their less-than-traditional rise to stardom.

“I’ve been involved in four Habitat for Humanity builds over the last three years. I fell in love with it the first time I held the hammer and I thought, ‘This is really something I want to do again.’ I think traditionally and stereotypically construction seems like a man’s sport and we wanted to encourage a lot more women to do it.”

Community service in Hollywood is not just a passing trend.
“Garth and I were both raised with the mentality that you give back to your community. Its not about giving back if you’re successful or a celebrity or how much money you have, it’s about your responsibility as an adult to help others. We’re definitely living in a time where that’s the message from our president on down. We’re seeing people really embrace that spirit of service. I think what celebrity does is help shine a spotlight on a situation, and for me, it takes about two seconds for the volunteers to say, ‘OK, it’s great that you’re Trisha Yearwood, but how are you with a hammer?'”
