The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have named their daughter Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, Kensington Palace has said, yesterday after days speculation.
Charlotte, a name that is French in origin, is the feminine form of Charles. and also a traditional name with royal pedigree. Queen Charlotte is King George III wife, who founded the world Kew Gardens.
The King George III bought Buckingham House in 1761 for his wife Queen Charlotte to use as a family home close to St James’s Palace. Now it known as Queen’s House, Buckingham Palace.
Charlotte name also has featured in Kate’s family. It is the middle name of Pippa Middleton, and name of his cousin Charlotte Spencer, Earl Spencer’s youngest daughter.
The Earl tweeted: “Perfect names. My 2 years old Charlotte Diana will be thrilled at cousinly name-sharing.”
Elizabeth is the name of The Queen, The Queen Mother and also Kate’s middle name.
As for Diana, The Duke of Cambridge, Prince William was determined to pay tribute to his mother, Princess Diana.
“By using both Charlotte and Diana, Prince William is paying tribute to both his parents. And you have got a tribute to his much-loved grandmother Elizabeth, and indeed great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth (The Queen Mother). It is a nicely balanced compliment,” said the historian Dr Judith Rowbotham.
The fourth line to the throne who will be known as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge, was born on Saturday in the Lindo Wing of London’s St Mary’s Hospital, weigh 8lbs 3 oz.
